New York to California car shipping covers roughly 2,800 to 3,000 miles depending on where in each state the car starts and ends. Door to door, a typical open-carrier run takes 7 to 10 days: a truck carrying eight or nine cars under a federally limited driving clock, with other stops along the way.

Our Bronx, Yonkers and Long Island offices load westbound cars daily, and the Buffalo and Albany offices feed the same corridor by way of I-90. Use the quote tool next to the heading for a live price; the numbers below are typical ranges for a running mid-size sedan booked about a week out.

Two truck paths across the country and why the southern one runs in winter

Nearly every car we send west follows one of two highways. The northern path is I-80: across Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana to Chicago, then Omaha, Cheyenne, Salt Lake City and over the Sierra into Sacramento and the Bay Area. It is the shortest line to Northern California and the default from April through October.

The southern path leaves New York on I-81 or I-95, picks up I-40 around Nashville, crosses Oklahoma City and Albuquerque, then drops to I-10 through Phoenix into Los Angeles and San Diego. It adds a few hundred miles, but from November to March most dispatchers prefer it. Wyoming closes I-80 to high-profile vehicles in high wind and Donner Pass can require chains or shut entirely. A San Francisco car in winter usually comes up I-5 from the south.

What New York to California car shipping costs

The typical open-carrier price is $1,350 to $1,500 for a running sedan from the NYC metro to a major California city. Enclosed transport runs $1,900 to $2,200, the right choice for a collector car or anything with paint you do not want exposed to three thousand miles of road grit. SUVs and full-size pickups add $100 to $250; a car that does not run adds $100 to $200 for the winch.

Summer is the busy season, with students and relocations stacking up from June through August, and prices drift toward the top of the range. A flexible pickup window of three to five days almost always beats a fixed date. The car shipping cost guide breaks down the surcharges.

Relays at Chicago, Dallas or Phoenix are normal in New York to California car shipping

On a run this long, your car may ride on two trucks. A carrier that works the East and Midwest brings it to a hub such as Chicago, Dallas or Phoenix, and a western carrier picks it up from there, sometimes after a day or two at a secure yard. This is how much long-haul freight moves, and it is often why a quoted price is lower than a single truck would charge.

What matters is that the condition report follows the car: each driver signs for the vehicle in the same condition, and you inspect against the New York sheet at delivery. If you want one truck the whole way, say so at booking; it costs more, but it can be done.

Delivery in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego

Los Angeles has narrow residential streets and low-hanging trees, and a 75-foot hauler cannot go everywhere. The Westside and the San Fernando Valley are usually fine; the driver meets you at a wide street or a shopping center lot nearby. Hillside addresses in the Hollywood Hills, Laurel Canyon and up Pacific Coast Highway toward Malibu need a smaller truck for the last few miles, which adds a day and some cost, or the driver meets you at the bottom of the hill. Tell us the address at booking so we plan for it.

Orange County is easy: Irvine, Anaheim and Huntington Beach sit on wide arterials off I-5 and the 405. San Diego is the end of the southern route, and deliveries to Camp Pendleton, Miramar and Naval Base San Diego follow the same process as any military car shipping order.

The Bay Area and Sacramento: hills, bridges and students

San Francisco is the toughest delivery city in the state. Russian Hill, Nob Hill, Twin Peaks and Noe Valley are too steep for a loaded hauler to stop on safely and too tight to turn around in, so most deliveries happen at a flat meeting point near the Embarcadero, Mission Bay or Daly City, or across the bridge in Oakland and Emeryville. The East Bay flats, San Jose and the Peninsula, where most tech relocations land, are easy to serve from I-880 and 101.

Sacramento is the first big stop off the I-80 path and often the cheapest California delivery from New York. Stanford and Berkeley students shipping a car for the fall term should book in late July; UCLA and USC families see the same crunch. Our door-to-door page explains the meeting-point handoff.

Emissions rules, EVs and what to do before pickup

Buyers should know this before shipping west: California will not register a vehicle with fewer than 7,500 miles unless it is California-certified. A 49-state car bought in New York with 2,000 miles on it can be shipped, but the DMV will not register it until it meets California standards or crosses that mileage. It is between you and the DMV, not a shipping problem, but it is a painful surprise at the counter.

Electric vehicles, especially Tesla and Rivian deliveries, are a growing share of this lane. Load the car with a 30 to 50 percent charge: enough to drive on and off the truck at both ends and at any relay, not so much that you ship dead weight. EVs are heavy, and some carriers add a $100 to $200 weight surcharge on a long run. The usual pre-shipping checklist applies otherwise: quarter tank, no personal items, toll transponder out, spare key. Expect delivery calls on Pacific time, and expect tracking to be dispatch check-ins at pickup, at any relay and a day out, not a package map.

Questions about New York to California car shipping

How long does it take to ship a car from New York to California?

Plan on 7 to 10 days from pickup to delivery for an open carrier. The truck covers 400 to 500 miles a day under federal driving limits and makes other stops along the way. Winter trips on the southern I-40 and I-10 route can add a day, and a relay at a hub can add one or two more.

Why would my car change trucks in Chicago or Phoenix?

Many carriers run a region rather than the whole country, so a cross-country car is handed from an eastern truck to a western one at a hub. The vehicle is signed for in the same condition at each handoff and the original inspection report travels with it. This is routine on coast-to-coast loads and often lowers the price.

Can a car hauler deliver to the Hollywood Hills or a San Francisco hill?

Usually not to the door. Full-size haulers cannot safely stop on steep, narrow streets or turn around on them. The driver meets you at a flat, wide spot nearby, such as a shopping center or the street at the base of the hill, or we arrange a smaller truck for the last few miles at extra cost. Give us the exact address at booking.

What charge level should an electric car have for shipping?

Aim for 30 to 50 percent. That covers driving on and off the truck at pickup, at any relay yard and at delivery, with a cushion if the car sits a few days. A full battery adds weight for no benefit. Leave the charging cable in the trunk, have key card or app access ready for the driver, and mention the EV at booking.

Can I register a 49-state car in California after shipping it?

Only if it has 7,500 miles or more, or is California-certified. California treats a vehicle under 7,500 miles as new and requires it to meet California emissions standards to be registered. Most cars sold nationally are 50-state compliant, but some are not, so check the emissions label under the hood before you buy. We move the car either way.
